Two and a Half Awesome New Beer-y Interviews

beeradvocate_magazine_julyIt has been some time since any new Beer Advocate magazine clips have found their way onto this website. That situation is mainly attributable to the fact that, um, hi, I have a job, so I can’t be sitting around putting new pdf’s on this site all the time, no matter how awesome they look and/or read.

Today, though, I’ve managed to backfill some content between April, when you all read about how Al Marzi keeps Harpoon fresh and tasty, and now, when the July BA mag issue is long gone, with August hitting mailboxes any day now. As always, beer clips live here. And here’s a rundown of the new content you’ll find by clicking on that there link.

Martin Dickie, of the BrewDog Brewery: Scotland’s brewing punks want to take the British beer scene where it hasn’t been in a while – the cutting edge. That involves playing with new hops and flavor profiles. It also involves digging up an old IPA recipe, brewing the thing, stuffing it in casks, and strapping the casks to a fishing boat trawling the North Atlantic in the dead of winter.

Christian Ettinger, of Hopworks Urban Brewery: I met with Christian a few months ago, when I was out in Portland. He’s not only incredibly hospitable; he also brews some killer beers. The hook here is that, in brewing his killer beers, Christian has taken sustainable brewing further than it’s ever been taken before. His brew kettle runs on biodiesel that he processes from waste frialator oil. The delivery van runs on straight veggie oil. He’s installing solar panels on the roof, and growing hops and herbs out back. Parking lot surfaces are permeable, and the vegetation outside the Hopworks pub is native, so it doesn’t need to be watered. The dude’s boots are recycled. And did I mention that his beer is damn good?

What’s missing? The month of May, when I talked with Pat McIlhenny, founder and brewmaster at California’s Alpine Beer Company. People who know good beer rave about Pat’s work. Unfortunately, I’ve only got half a page of Pat talking about his work to share with you folks right now. The other half didn’t make it from server to email to website. Hopefully, it won’t take another three months for it to show up here.

But, uh, why wait around when you could subscribe and get these interviews – along with tons of other awesome content and peerless design – delivered to your mailbox every month? The post office, for all its ills, remains more reliable than myself.
