One of the things about writing about commercial real estate every day is that you pay close attention to buildings – where they are, what they do, how they interact with their surroundings, and how they look.

So when I was at the Copley Marriott yesterday for Drew Faust’s speech, I’m riding up the elevators, looking around, and thinking, could this place be any more dated? The chunky white lines accented with light strings, the stifling indoor atriums – the place couldn’t scream 1986 any harder if it tried.

Or so it seemed. Then I caught sight of this. It’s one of several paintings of the city leading the way to the hotel’s main ballroom. Check the dude’s mullet. And go Bird!

A New Leader in the Stippled Portrait Clubhouse?

Back in February, this blog noted the appearance of a kids-smoking-pipes trend story in the Wall Street Journal.

It was accompanied by one of those old-tymey stippled illustrations of a pipe – one that was captioned, simply, “PIPE.”

Today marks the appearance of a different trend, and a different inanimate object is now on the receiving end of stippled portraiture.

The hottt new trend: Adults mangling their own heads, and the heads of their family members, in the name of saving $10 at the barber shop.

It’s illustrated by what is likely the most serious treatment of a set of Wahl clippers, ever, in the history of time.

One final, gratuitous note to end an entirely gratuitous week of assaults on the beleaguered, possibly-ill State Senator Jim Marzilli: Smoking Gun-style documents from the Lowell PD reveal a few choice quotes that managed to evade published reports. Two stand out.

The victim who delivered that epic hooker line (would that we were all so quick witted whilst being sexually harassed) initially asked Marzilli, “You friggin’ queer, what is your deal?”

No, lady, he’s clearly not a friggin’ queer – not judging by this (failed) pickup line, anyway: “Do you shave or are you hairy down below?” How that one snuck by the Herald is beyond comprehension.
